About Us |
| Each year since 2002, the people of Welshampton in North Shropshire have come together to design, build and then cremate a themed bonfire in a spectacular free festival of fire. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
In 2009 we burned all of our
nightmares with the Haunted House. Before this in 2008 an Egret
heralded the arrival of a great Firebird in the village with a message for
us all. Where as in 2007 we re-told one of the great Greek myth's, the
story of Pegasus (in Welshampton style).
In past years a forgotten train
from years gone by has joined us in the village to tell the story of the
peoples railway and the year before that we commemorated the 200th
anniversary of the battle of Trafalgar and told how Extremely Rear Admiral
Sir Mike played his part!
Brave Sir Mike (often our stories hero) has had many great
adventures. He has been Mars in A 50 ft rocket as his transport with a chicken
and a monkey for his crew, there were lights, music, spectacular fireworks (and
plenty of rain as it happens) but a good time was had by all! In 2003, the village became prey to local anti-heroine Ginny Greenteeth, whose plans to freeze time and keep winter at bay forever was thwarted by an army of brave Mice who scaled Old Father Time's towering cuckoo clock and freed the cuckoo (you had to be there)! In 2002, the brave and eponymous Sir Mike fought and slew a fearsome dragon in its gloomy castle lair. |

| This year's Welshampton bonfire was dedicated to the memory of bonfire committee president, Chris Thomas, who died just a few days before the 2009 event. Chris was one of the most dedicated members of the bonfire team and since the early days had been involved in all aspects of the bonfire not least in writing and performing music for the show. Chris and I were also the original palleteers travelling miles together to collect vital materials for the build. His enthusiasm, commitment and sense of humour were an inspiration to all those who worked with him and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts are with Gladys and the boys. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
